Watercolor and colored pencil are combined to give the painting soft flowing color and crisp detail at the same time. It allows the artist to give the artwork more depth and character than either medium alone.
The watercolor is applied to the heavyweight watercolor paper first to the point of being an almost finished watercolor painting. Then the colored pencil is added to sharpen the detail "down to the whiskers and eyelashes".
